2002年4月から2002年6月までのメッセージ
コミッティーからのメッセージ − 2002年6月
この春はジャパニーズカンバセーショングループにとってまるで「文化のジェットコースター」とでもいうような季節でした。
4月の落ち着いた中にも楽しい花見ピクニックの後、5月はハマースミス・モーリス会のサイモン・ライトさんによるモーリスダンスのデモンストレーションで始まりました。なんとシェークスピアからの引用も交えながら、モーリスダンスの歴史と伝統について短いディスカッションをした後、サイモンはただじっとして説明するよりも動きながらの方がいいとばかりに、華麗な手さばき足さばき、回転、ジャンプが一杯のダンスを続けざまに披露してくれました。メイソンズ・アームズの私達の会場を訪れた人たちは、このダンスにどれほど俊敏さが必要かよくわかりました。
メロディオン奏者のガーリー・オマホニーさんの好意による伴奏に乗り、ダンスは洗練された中にも(bawdy)で、メンバーは心から魅惑されました。
6月の初めはイギリス中がサッカーのワールドカップ熱に取り憑かれました。カンバセーショングループも例外ではありません。メンバーは、ブラジルのサッカー応援歌をバックグラウンドミュージックに、イングランドと日本のサッカー選手の名前をミニチュアのサッカーグラウンドの正しい位置に並べるというゲームをしました。まず第一に、各選手の名前は半分に切ってそれぞれが1枚のカードに書かれており、2枚のカードを合わせて正しい名前を作るところから初めなければなりません。ベッカム、オーエン、稲本、中田といった名前を作るのはだれでも簡単でしたが、さてポジションとなると、何人もがグラウンドの真中で迷子になってしました！実際のイングランドチームのようだという人もいるかもね！
私達はピカデリーの近くのスポーツバーに集まり、日本対ロシアの試合を観戦することで、私達なりのワールドカップへの参加を続けました。ロシアの追い上げに緊張感は高まりましたが、それもなんのその、私達はバーの大量の食べ物やビールを片付けてしまいました。
そんな大興奮のイベントが続いた後、これからの1、2ヶ月はアートに目を向けます。7月は岸本先生のご好意による書道のデモンストレーション、そして8月は物語ゲームです。

コミッティーからのメッセージ − 2002年４月
カンバセーショングループにとって、これまでのところ2002年はぎゅうぎゅう詰めの年でした。1月には全日本カルタ連盟の方を迎え、カルタの起源についての興味深いディスカッションの後、メンバーは実際にカルタ（百人一首）のゲームに加わり大興奮しました。最初は控えめだった人たちも、いつか椅子から身を乗り出して次に読まれるカードを敵より早くはたき出そうと待ち構えるようになりました。カルタは静かなゲームだという思い込みは完全に覆されてしまいました。
2月にはメンバーがチームを組み、伝統的な「節分」の鬼の話を英語に翻訳することを競い合いました。
単なる直訳には飽き足らず、効果音（ドアのきしむ音やいびきの音）やさらには歌まで加えて競い合ったのでした。レベルは大変高く、著作権保護を考えなければならない程でした！
3月には「ひな祭り」が単に女の子だけのお祭りではないことを証明しました。
「クリプトンファクター」に匹敵する知力テストとして、メンバーは制限時間の中で「ひな壇」の上に人形や道具を正しく配置することを求められ、これをチーム毎に競い合いました。内裏様、お雛さまの配置は簡単ですが、五人囃子や三人官女などとなるとかなり難しいものです。結局「左大臣」はこちらから見て左側なのでしょうか？それとも内裏様から見て左側なのでしょうか？
それに比べれば4月に行われた「漫画クイズ」は教養度は落ちるかもしれませんが、それでもやっかいなものでした。日本人と日本人以外のメンバーの混じったグループの中、日本人メンバーは「厄介ものデニス」、「アスタリスク」「デンジャーマウス」について学ぶことになり、日本人以外のメンバーは「ルパン3世」「ゲゲゲの鬼太郎」（さて彼の片目はだれのものなのか？）、そして「サザエさん」について学ぶのです。一見難しかったかに見えたこのゲームでしたが、全チームが満点を獲得し、皆が子供時代を無駄にしてきたことを証明したのでした。
さて、コミッティーから大変悲しいお知らせがあります。それはイングランドのサッカーチームのように、スター選手を失ったことです。佐藤和子さんはこれまで、準備のミーティングやグループの活動に、デビッド・ベッカム並みのすばらしいひらめきで貢献してくれました。和子さんはこれまで数年間コミッティーのメンバーでしたが、月末に日本に帰国することになったのです（多分ワールドカップのイングランド対アルゼンチン戦を観戦するためだと思います！！）。和子さんお元気で。これからも連絡を取り合いましょう。この際、新しいコミッティーのメンバーとして、ベン・グリーンさんを迎えることが出来たのはラッキーでした。12月に彼が「赤鼻のトナカイ」を見事に翻訳したのを見て、我々コミッティーは彼がこの仕事にぴったりだと確信しています。
次のカンバセーショングループの活動は4月27日、午後1時からハイドパークで行われる「花見ピクニック」です。アルバートメモリアル（ロイヤル・アルバート・ホールの向かい）に集合し、桜の花とみんなで持ち寄る食べ物を楽しみましょう。みなさんの友達も歓迎です。

To encourage the JCG particpants in December into the holiday spirit, we foxed them with a festive Japanese language game. This required Christmas and New Year vocabulary to be explained in Japanese to team members, in a race against other teams, but without actually mentioning the word in question! This proved to be a case of "not as easy as it sounds!" - but participants battled on gamely with the help of (mostly attentive!) team members.

August 2002 Story-telling game
August brings the festival of O-bon when the spirits of the departed return home to pay a visit. To celebrate this sparky occasion we will be holding a ghost-story telling competition. Respect and prizes will be given to the best ghost stories that scare us silly, or if you don't have only of your own, to the best reaction of our own ghost story. Shuji -All budding artists and calligraphers, should have their pens at the ready for July's event, when we will be welcoming Sachiko Kishimoto, an expert in Japanese Calligraphy and a member of the Japan Calligraphic Arts Association, to demonstrate her art. Kishimoto Sensei was featured in the Matsuri in Hyde Park and in the World Travel Market in Earls court.
June 2002
At the beginning of June, the whole of England was in the grip of World Cup fever , and the Japanese Conversation Group was no exception. To the background music of a Brazilian football anthem (quite appropriate in retrospect), our members worked to arrange the names of the English and Japanese football squads in the correct positions on a miniature football pitch. First of all however, the name of each player had to be formed by matching two cards on each of which one half of his name was written. Nobody had any difficulty matching Bekkuhamu, Ouen, Inamoto, or Nakata, but when it came to positioning, some got lost in the midfield! ・a bit like the English team on occasion, some might say!
We continued our own participation in the World Cup, with a trip to the Sport's Bar near Piccadilly to watch the Japan v Russia game. The tension was clearly evident as Russia tried to raise a comeback after slipping behind, but that didn't stop us polishing off large quantities of the ample food and beer on sale on the premises.
May 2002
After the sedate pleasures of the Hanami picnic in April, we started our activities in May with a demonstration of Morris Dancing by Simon Wright of the Hammersmith Morris Men . After brief discussion of the history of the tradition (quoting Shakespeare no less), Simon launched into a series of set pieces comprising a full quota of flourishes, twirls and jumps, preferring it seemed to talk and explain while on the hoof rather than when standing still. No mean feat for those who have visited our room in the Mason's Arms and can imagine the agility that is required. Accompanied by music, courtesy of Gary O'Mahoney on the melodeon, the demonstration was both refined-yet-bawdy, and our members appeared to be truly fascinated by the display.
April 2002 -Hanami picnic - Saturday 27 April
Our annual "HANAMI" picnic will be at Hyde Park in the same place as last year, under three very fat, luscious pink cherry trees. And the weather forecasters have guaranteed sunshine for us! From 1 p.m. in Hyde Park. We shall be meeting at the Albert Memorial (opposite the Albert Hall) to enjoy the Cherry Blossom and the nice food that everyone brings.
April 2002
The Manga quiz held in was less highbrow but proved just as taxing. In mixed groups, the Japanese members had to learn all they could about Dennis the Menace, Asterisk and Danger Mouse from the non-Japanese members, who in turn had to learn all they could about Lupin-the-Third, Kitaro (who does that eye belong to?) and Sazae-san. Despite, the apparent difficulty, the teams proved that they had had a wasted youth by all scoring full marks.
March 2002
The group proved that Hina-Matsuri is not just for girls. In a mental exercise, we asked our members to demonstrate the correct arrangement of the figures on the Hina-Dan ・within a time-limit and against other teams doing the same. The Emperor and Empress were straight-forward but the Five Musicians, the Ladies in Waiting and the other characters, proved more tricky: after all does the Minister of the Left go on my left or the Empress・left?
February 2002
Saw our members team up to pit their wits against each other translating the traditional ghostly story of Setsubun from Japanese into English. Not content with just a literal rendering, teams opened up extra avenues of competition by employing some unusual sound effects (creaking doors, snoring) and even song!
January 2002
The All Japan Karuta Association visited us and, after an interesting discussion of the origins of the game of Karuta, whipped the members up into a frenzied state by holding actual Karuta games: previously sedate people were poised on the edge of their seats ready to slam the next-card-called away from their opponents. Our perception of card games being a quiet activity has changed forever.
